Moderated by Aleksandar Bošković, Lecturer in Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.
Landscape Cinema: Image Politics After Yugoslavia draws on Levi’s recent study, Miniatures: On the Politics of Film Form (2021), to call attention to some of the most significant contemporary documentary films and filmmakers from the Yugoslav region. Poetics and politics of cinema after socialist Yugoslavia’s violent disintegration – in particular, the status and meaning of landscapes in the wake of war, ethnic cleansing, and genocide – are in the focus of analysis, which revolves around the films of Ognjen Glavonić, Jasmila Žbanić, Aron Sekelj, Selma Doborac, Goran Dević, and Nika Autor.
Pavle Levi is professor of film studies at Stanford University. He is the author of numerous books, including Cinema by Other Means (2012), Jolted Images (2018), and the just-released film-book, Hypnos in Cineland (2022).
