Yuri Shevchuk in the Hromadske Radio studio

On May 18, 2019, Yuri Shevchuk, lecturer of Ukrainian language at Columbia University had a 45-minute live appearance on the Hromadske Ukrainian national public radio in Kyiv in the show entitled “In Black and White.” He discussed at length his methodology of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language to students of Columbia and Yale Universities. The show host Yaryna Skurativska was particularly interested in how his students could achieve a truly impressive communicative competency in Ukrainian as a result just two semesters of studies. Last summer, Columbia student Ainsley Katz appeared on the same broadcast and fielded questions from the show host and listeners for some 50 minutes, all in Ukrainian. Ainsley had studied Ukrainian with Dr. Shevchuk for two semesters at the elementary level and then took an intensive one-month Intermediate level course at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv paid for by the Ukrainian Studies Program at Columbia.
