Diana Stanislavovna Avdeeva

Biography

Diana Stanislavovna Avdeeva is originally from Moscow, Russia, and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Slavic Languages at Columbia University. She holds a B.A. in Linguistics and the Teaching of English and Italian Languages and Cultures from Moscow State Linguistic University, an M.A. in Russian as a Foreign Language from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, and an M.A. in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Arizona.

Her research interests include nineteenth-century Russian literature, national identity, ethnic diversity in Russia and the global Russophone community, as well as modern Russian history and politics. She is also interested in questions of popular culture, gender and sexuality, and the cultural and historical intersections between Russia and Ukraine.

Diana has extensive experience teaching Russian language and culture, including first- and second-year Russian courses, as well as a variety of culture courses on the history and culture of Ukraine and Slavic folklore, in addition to a self-designed course on Eastern European cinema.

She is currently developing LOLibrary of Russian-Language Memes, an innovative and freely accessible digital resource that allows instructors, students, and learners of all levels to engage with Russian through humor, contemporary internet culture, and authentic language use. She is also working on launching a new scholarly society and a comprehensive English-language resource on the Indigenous peoples of Russia.

At Columbia, Diana serves on the Arts and Sciences Graduate Council (ASGC) as the M.A. representative for the Slavic Languages Department.

She is fluent in Russian, English, Italian, and Ukrainian, and is actively working to master Tatar, Japanese, and American Sign Language (ASL).
