William A. Foley

Biography

I am emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney, having been University Professor and Head of Department there for 30 years. I have a AB from Brown University and an MA and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. I moved to New York City for personal reasons in 2019. My research interests are syntactic theory/typology and sociocultural linguistics. I mainly work on the languages of New Guinea, where I have done long term on site fieldwork in remote villages on numerous occasions, but I also have done work on the languages of insular Southeast Asia and the wider Pacific. I have published extensively in books, book chapters and journal articles. I am always keen to explore the interrelationship between theory and description and to expand the terms of both through the careful documentation of linguistic structures and communicative practices in the region.
