Yuri Shevchuk Interview with Suspilne

September 02, 2026

On September 1, traditionally celebrated in Ukraine as the Day of Knowledge to mark the start of the new academic year, linguist Yuri Shevchuk was interviewed on Suspilne (Ukraine’s public broadcaster, analogous to NPR). Speaking with Halyna Babii, the host of the talk show Today. Afternoon, Shevchuk discussed the current state and challenges of Ukrainian language studies in North America. He highlighted the leading role that Columbia University’s Ukrainian Language Program has played in developing the field since 2004, particularly through the publication of three foundational learning aids: Beginner's Ukrainian (2011), the Ukrainian-English Collocation Dictionary (2021), and Say It in Ukrainian: A Practical Course in Ukrainian Phonetics (2026).
