Say It in Ukrainian

This is the first practical course in Ukrainian phonetics designed for beginning students taking their first steps toward mastering the Ukrainian language, as well as for intermediate and advanced learners seeking to refine their pronunciation and overcome difficulties stemming from their linguistic background.

The course consists of two parts: the book itself and a companion website featuring 412 interactive audio exercises organized into clusters, each centered on a particular Ukrainian sound to be practiced through listening and repetition. Every sound (phoneme) is presented in word-initial, medial, and final positions. Each exercise is brought to life by the voices of some of Ukraine’s most celebrated writers and poets — Yuri Andrukhovych, Oksana Zabuzhko, Serhiy Zhadan, Taras Prokhasko, and Lyuba Yakimchuk — creating an inspiring connection between language and culture.

Say It in Ukrainian is the third installment in Yuri Shevchuk’s trilogy of Ukrainian language-learning resources. Beginner’s Ukrainian (2011) introduces the fundamentals of grammar, while The Ukrainian-English Collocation Dictionary (2021) presents the core vocabulary of modern Ukrainian in all its stylistic richness and expressive depth. This latest publication opens the gateway to mastering the sound system of contemporary Ukrainian.
